SNP SCRAPS PEAK RAIL FARES IN NORTH AYRSHIRE

LOCAL COMMUTERS TO SAVE £1,457 A YEAR TRAVELLING FROM IRVINE TO GLASGOW

The SNP’s scrapping of peak rail fares on ScotRail services will come into effect from the start of September – saving commuters in North Ayrshire around £1,457 a year.

The change is part of a package of measures implemented by the SNP Scottish Government designed to support Scots with the cost of living and to help encourage more sustainable transport.

Local MSP Ruth Maguire has welcomed the change, saying it’ll put money in the pockets of residents in North Ayrshire.

Commenting, local MSP Ruth Maguire said:

“The cost of living is at the top of everyone’s minds – and the SNP has taken action by lowering the cost of a train journey for everyone in Scotland.

“I’m pleased that scrapping peak rail fares will save local commuters money – around £1,457 a year, commuting from Irvine to Glasgow every working day of the year.

“This was only possible because the SNP brought ScotRail back into public ownership in 2022.

“Where we have the powers, we’ve taken action to help save Scots money – but with devolution, we can only address the symptoms – with independence we could address the root causes.”

Note: Annual Saving = (Return Peak Fare – Return Non-Peak Fare) × 5 journeys per week × 47 working weeks per year. https://www.scotrail.co.uk/tickets/peak-fares-gone-for-good
