Original Predicted Grades for SQA Exams to Be Awarded

Ruth Maguire MSP has today welcomed an announcement from the Deputy First Minister that school students whose exam results were downgraded by SQA modelling would now receive reissued grades according to original teacher predictions.

In a statement made in the Scottish Parliament, Deputy First Minister, John Swinney confirmed that all downgraded exam results would be withdrawn and that the SQA would be instructed to reissue results based on teacher or lecturer judgement.

Following the statement in chamber, the MSP for Cunninghame South thanked Mr Swinney for listening and acting and asked that the impact of exam moderation would be assessed for all marginalised and disadvantaged groups.

Commenting further, Ms Maguire said: “I’m glad that the Deputy First Minister has listened to pupils who felt that they had been penalised and their individual talent and hard work was disregarded due to their postcodes. It is right and proper that this is being put right.

“I’d like to congratulate all pupils in North Ayrshire and across Scotland who have received an amended grade which reflects their work and wish them well in furthering their future aspirations, whether in further education or in entering employment.”
