Scotland Becomes First Country to Offer Free Provision of Period Products

Ruth Maguire MSP has welcomed the passing into law of the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill. The bill, which was passed unanimously by the Scottish Parliament, makes Scotland the first country in the world to provide free period products in all public buildings.

The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill enshrines the right to access free period products for anyone who menstruates in Scotland. This will be through a duty placed on local authorities and education providers to make period products obtainable for free to anyone who needs to use them.

This builds on steps taken by the Scottish Government as it became a world leader as the first country to provide free products for pupils and students in education, as well as to women on low-incomes across a range of community settings – investing over £21 million in the scheme.

The SNP MSP for Cunninghame South said: “I was very proud to vote for this ground breaking legislation.

“Providing period products in our public buildings offers basic dignity for anybody in need of them and will make a material, positive change to lives.

“The hard work and cross-party collaboration that has gone into making Scotland the first country in the world to offer the free provision of period products is to be commended and is a testament to everybody who has campaigned for this.”
