This year, Cunninghame South MSP, Ruth Maguire and her Team are taking part in the Kiltwalk Glasgow completing the 23-mile ‘Mighty Stride’ to raise money for Ayrshire charity, Break the Silence.
Break the Silence were founded in 2004 and provide individualised, professional support for survivors of sexual trauma in North and East Ayrshire. Their life-changing services are fully confidential and are provided to anyone, aged 13 and over, who has experienced sexual trauma. ‘Break the Silence’ offer a range of therapeutic choices all delivered by professional therapists and tailored to suit the needs of the individual. Sessions can be delivered remotely or face-to-face with the understanding that each, individual experience is different.
Prior to the walk, Ruth was pleased to catch up with Break the Silence’s CEO, Lesley Craig in Irvine, to get an update on the work of the charity.
Speaking after the meeting Ruth said “I am really glad to be able to take part in this year’s Kiltwalk in Glasgow to contribute to the fundraising efforts of Break the Silence and back the really important work they do supporting people who’ve experienced sexual trauma. As well as raising funds by taking part in the Kiltwalk, the team and I are also hoping to raise awareness of the services that ‘Break the Silence’ offer and will be sharing information and clips throughout the day.”
Break the Silence CEO, Lesley Craig, shared an insight into the difficulties the third sector has faced;
“2023 is a difficult year for many charities across Scotland. At Break The Silence we face increased demand, rising costs and reduced income. However, despite the challenges encountered, we remain firmly focussed on ensuring swift access to professional support for those in need. We are therefore delighted and extremely grateful that Ruth and her Team have chosen to support Break The Silence at this year’s Kiltwalk, taking part in The Might Stride and walking 23 miles to show their support and to raise awareness of our service. We wish them, and indeed all Kiltwalkers our very best wishes for the event.”
