On Saturday 16th July, along with thousands of others across towns and cities in Scotland, Ruth Maguire MSP took part in a demonstration to oppose the renewal of Trident, the UK’s fleet of nuclear-armed submarines.
Due to the political unrest of the past weeks not having allowed for proper scrutiny of the plans, the SNP has called for a delay to the vote. Despite this, MPs are due to vote later today on whether to renew the Trident nuclear weapons of mass destruction.
All but one of Scotland’s 59 MPs are expected to vote against the government, including all 54 SNP MPs, Labour’s Ian Murrary, LibDem Alistair Carmichael, and independents Michelle Thomson and Natalie McGarry. Scotland’s one Conservative MP, David Mundell, will vote for.
It is almost impossible for the UK Conservative Government to lose the vote, which is widely supported by its own MPs as well as by many opposition Labour MPs.
