That the Parliament congratulates the Irvine Carters Society and the Marymass Festival Committee on their successful staging of the 2016 Marymass Festival; understands that its roots can be traced back to a medieval religious festival and horse fair, and that it incorporates core events such as the parade around the four ports of the ancient and Royal Burgh of Irvine, the “sashing” of the Queen-elect and her four Marys, and the Marymass parade; recognises what it sees as the importance of ancient festivals across the country, such as this and the Selkirk Riding and the Braemar Gathering, in celebrating and upholding Scotland’s rich heritage and traditions; applauds their role in binding and bringing together communities, and wishes the organisers of all such festivals every success in their endeavours throughout the year.
