This week Ruth visited St Mary’s Kenmure Secure Unit in Bishopriggs, in her capacity as Convener of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, on a fact finding session as part of the committee’s scrutiny into the Age of Criminal Responsibility Bill. A huge thanks to staff and young people who took the time to share their experiences.
At the Conveners Group meeting, Ruth questioned the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, about the challenges with regards to embedding human rights into Scottish Parliamentary legislation and practices.
Ruth also asked the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Humza Yousaf, how changes to home detention curfew will fit in with a victim-centred approach across the criminal justice system.
Ruth also visited an exhibition by Royal Blind, Scotland’s largest vision impairment organisation, and celebrating its 225th anniversary, to discuss the work of the charity and its new campaign entitled ‘Our Vision for Equal Education’.
